Although James Dubray called himself a common man, to many of us of all colors and races he was friend, father, teacher, uncle, Spiritual leader, and most of all Grandpa.
The following words give you a glimpse of who he was and is. Because he asked his editor not to change his words and to keep the Lakota syntax, sometimes the words may seem confusing, less than grammatically perfect, or have double meaning.
He said, "If they don't get it, then they aren't suppose to."Grandpa often taught in circles or riddles. In his own words, "Now this is the hard part. You start listening over there, bout time you get there he's back over here. He starts up again and then he jumps ahead about his life and then he comes back. I don't know, it's going to take years before somebody really gets it straight. This'll come though."
