About this item
by Lord Dunsany (Author)
Time and the Gods is one of Lord Dunsany's earliest and most influential collections of mythic fantasy, establishing the dreamlike cosmology that would shape modern fantasy literature.
First published in 1906, this volume continues the imaginative architecture introduced in The Gods of Pegāna, presenting a series of prose-poems and short mythic tales set in an invented divine cosmos ruled by capricious gods and governed by inexorable Time. In these brief, luminous narratives, Dunsany constructs an entire mythology-at once distant and strangely intimate-where gods quarrel, cities fall, prophets speak, and destiny moves with quiet inevitability.
Written in elevated yet musical prose, the collection stands as a foundational work of early twentieth century fantasy fiction. Dunsany's influence would later be acknowledged by writers such as H. P. Lovecraft and J. R. R. Tolkien, and his mythic method helped define the tonal and structural possibilities of modern secondary-world fantasy. Time and the Gods remains essential reading for those interested in the origins of high fantasy, mythopoeic fiction, and the poetic tradition of imaginative literature.
