About this item

by Charlotte Mason (Author)

Towards a Philosophy of Education presents Charlotte Mason's mature reflections on learning, character formation, and the principles that underlie a living education.

In this final volume of her influential educational series, Charlotte Mason gathers together decades of experience as a teacher and educational reformer to articulate the philosophical foundations of her approach to schooling. Mason argues that education is not merely the transmission of information but the cultivation of the whole person-mind, character, imagination, and moral judgement.

Central to Mason's method is the idea that children are born persons with a natural appetite for knowledge. She advocates for rich exposure to literature, history, nature study, and the arts, alongside habits of attention, narration, and thoughtful reflection. Rather than relying on rote memorisation or mechanical instruction, Mason emphasises living books, meaningful engagement with ideas, and the development of intellectual discipline through habit.

Part philosophy, part practical guide, Towards a Philosophy of Education remains one of the most significant works in the Charlotte Mason tradition. Widely read within homeschooling and classical education communities, the book continues to influence educators who seek a humane and intellectually serious approach to teaching and learning.
